E-resident

Opening an account for e-residents

  • Further information about becoming an e-resident can be found here.
  • You can submit an application to open an account at a branch or on the Swedbank website.

Documents required for opening an account

  • a working e-Resident ID Card (Digi-ID);
  • an identity document issued in the e-resident’s country of location (ID card or passport);
  • if an e-resident wants to open an account for his or her company registered in Estonia, the registry card of the company must also be presented. An employee of the bank can also make an extract of the company’s registry card;
  • the bank may also request additional documents that prove the account holder’s connection with Estonia (documents that prove the origin of assets, the company’s ownership relations, links to Estonia, etc.).

The client pays a service fee for the opening of an account according to the price list.

Submitting applications at branches

The decision to open an account for an e-resident is made within five (5) banking days of receiving all of the necessary documents. If your application is approved, we ask you to come to the same branch where you submitted the application to open your account within 30 days.

Submitting applications on Swedbank’s website and video identification

The following steps must be taken to submit an application via the bank’s website:

  2. To submit an application

    • Log in using PIN1 of your Digi-ID and go to the account application form.
    • Fill in the form and sign it using PIN2 of your Digi-ID.
  3. Your application is analysed

    We will inform you of our decision to video interview you within three (3) banking days.

  4. Video interview

    Once you have received a positive response, you will be invited to a pre-arranged video interview where we will assess your suitability for the establishment of a business relationship. You can book a time for the video interview from 9:00-16:00 (Estonian time) Monday to Friday.

    • You must enter PIN1 of your Digi-ID to start the video.
    • You must be in the frame alone and fully visible.
    • During the interview, we will ask you to show your ID card or passport.
    • The employee of the bank may give you additional guidelines in order to better identify you.
  5. Decision to open an account

    We will inform you of our decision to open an account by e-mail within 10 banking days of the video meeting. We will send the contracts you must sign to you by e-mail. You must sign the contracts using PIN2 of the Digi-ID, encrypt them and return them to the bank, and the first transfer to the account must be an amount that at least covers the service fee for opening the account and the transfer must be made within 14 days of the contracts being sent to you.

    • The account can be activated when a transfer at least in an amount equalling the account opening fee is received from the personal account of the person who opens the account (transfers are only accepted from the following countries).
    • We will determine the account limits personally for you, but they cannot be higher than the limits specified by law.
    • We will e-mail you confirmation once the account has been activated.

Filling in the application does not guarantee that you will be invited to a video meeting or that an account will be opened for you.
